The monastery of Agia Lavra is tucked away among trees, 4,5km away from the town of Kalavrita. On the right-hand side of the monastery’s court lies the little chapel where the Greek revolution against the Ottoman Empire was launched in 1821, blessed by the Bishop Paleon Patron Germano during the religious celebrations of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The bullet ridden Banner of the Revolution is kept today in what is the third version the monastery since the revolution, the first having been burnt by Ibraem pasha, and the second destroyed by an earthquake, various fires and the invasion of the German troops in 1943.
One of the town’s exceptional monuments, and a place of Holy Worship, is the Place of Sacrifice, where all the town’s male population aged 14 years and up was executed by German troops, on the 13th of December 1943 (2nd World War).A huge cross sits on the hill of Kappi, to commemorate this horrific crime. The names of all who perished that day are inscripted on the pillars surrounding the main area. Within the catacomb, there is a number of small candle holders equal to the number of families who suffered the loss of a loved one.
